LGBTQ+ Boss Babes You Need To Follow

Know the history of LGBTQ+ Pride Month? Here's a small snippet of the history according to the Library of Congress, "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States".

Even though Pride Month falls on June every year, don't let that stop you from showing your Pride all year! In honor of Pride month this year, we wanted to highlight these LGBTQ+ Boss Babes we think you should follow!

Alexis Rotter

Alexis Rotter has always trended toward the grayscale world.  It is easy to be lost in this colorful world and miss the simple pleasures of the monotones with its shades of deep black, the shine of brilliant white, and everything in between.  What started for me as a simple hobby has unlocked the creativity within that resulted in thousands upon thousands of photos with varying subject and multiple joint exhibitions.

Photography opened many doors in the community throughout Hudson County and through this art, I’ve been able to work with incredible organizations such as Tempest Productions as they bring story time to children. Jazz House Kids where children are exposed to jazz through education and mentorship. Vault Allure expands the boundaries of art presentation by connecting music, dance, film, poetry, painting and technology. I’ve also had to opportunity to photograph incredible musicians from the likes of Regina Carter, Akua Dixon, Winard Harper, Ted Chubb, Bryan Beninghove, and Walter Parks to name a few.

Currently the photographer for the Riverview Jazz Organization after having worked with the organization since its inception, I intend to continue my involvement with the community, and give viewers of my photographs an unconventional view of conventional things.

Alyza Brevard-Rodriguez

Hi! My name is Alyza and I am the owner of SW3AT Sauna Studio in Downtown Jersey City, NJ. I moved to Jersey City when I was 18 and have called it home ever since. I attended and graduated from NJCU. After that I joined the U.S Navy as a military police officer where I currently still serve on active duty. I got married in Jersey City (ceremony in beautiful Mexico) to my amazing wife who was raised in Hoboken, NJ (Go Redwings!) We purchased a home in the Bergen Lafayette area in 2018 and are expecting our first child August 2019.

SW3AT is a niche business that caters to heat therapy which promotes weight loss, muscle recovery, toxin detox, lymphatic drainage, relaxation and an array of other benefits. We offer 45 minute sessions at competitive rates and various amenities that makes your personal experience like no other. In each session you are booked a personal suite with a personal sauna equipped with blue tooth capability and chromotherapy. Each suite also has complimentary water and lavender infused towels. For equipment and supplies we only utilize minority, women or veteran owned business, which was one of our main missions since opening. We hope to continue to educate the people of Jersey City and surrounding areas of infrared heat therapy as a wellness method and the amazing holistic benefits of it!

Chelsey Blake

I opened Hudson Paperie in 2015 with nothing but a dream and a passion for stationery design. My now wife sent me an article announcing that a stationery store in town was for sale saying nothing but “you should buy this”. I was just getting deep into my passion for stationery design, and she saw my destiny before I could see it for myself. So, I took my side gig designing and selling invitations on Etsy, and turned it into my career – one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Today, Hudson Paperie is a custom design studio with a focus on all things wedding. We pride ourselves on being a little out of the box and encourage our brides to ignore etiquette when necessary and create their own traditions. We’re located on Washington Street, the main drag in town, so we also have a retail shop where we sell unique cards and gifts, and put an emphasis on local makers and creators.

We are 100% owned and operated by women, something I am incredibly proud of. (#girlpower) I own the business with my oldest sister, Elijiah, who isn’t around for the day-to-day, but manages most of our finances. I run the business with a team of amazing woman, among them, my youngest sister, Erin, who manages the retail side where she charms all our shoppers with her bubbly personality – and my sorority sister, Cait, who is the Production Manager for our design studio. It truly is a family affair! With help from the dream team of strong, talented women surrounding me, we are able to create stationery for over 200 weddings annually. I live in town with my beautiful wife, Alyssa, and our puppy-son Deezy. When I’m not creating, I’m usually happiest with a glass of wine in-hand and good company by my side.

Emily Monus

PC: Melissa Cacioppo Photography

Hello Hudson County! I’m Emily Monus, the #veganladyboss behind Emily Monus Events

based out of Jersey City, NJ. I started EME in 2016, after coordinating non-profit galas, friend’s parties, and my own wedding. I noticed that there was an empty space in the realm of queer event planners, and I am delighted to fill that gap for the LGBTQ+ community in Hudson County and the greater NYC area. Those of us in the queer community, as well as our allies, greatly value hiring wedding professionals that are affirming of us and our relationships, and often seek providers that share our values. This is where Emily Monus Events shines, as we represent inclusivity in an industry where it is often overlooked. Another core value of my business is my commitment to sustainability by always sourcing second-hand materials first. The waste produced in special events can be staggering, and by shopping second-hand first, we make a small but impactful difference. My ideal client collaborators are folks who want to throw the wedding they want rather than the wedding that is expected of them... after all, a wedding isn’t any one thing! As we like to say— We’re here, We’re queer, let’s get you married!
