March is all about celebrating women and of course we cannot end this month without providing you with our Female Inspiration of the month for March.
WE of Hudson County works to empower and support women in all different ways. We believe building a supportive platform for women entrepreneurs is critical to the community. There are many ways to empower women and one of the ways we are empowering women - you can attend!
We are hosting an amazing networking event tonight! Please join us at One Sol in Hoboken, tickets can be purchased here. Use code 'WEDefense' for $5 off your ticket!
We are very excited to introduce March's Female Inspiration of the Month, Christina Ioannides!
1. Tell me about yourself and what you do!
I was born and raised in South Africa to Greek Cypriot parents. I began Kimura Shukokai Karaté at 9 years old and was inspired by it from the moment I stepped on the mat. I got my black belt in 1989 in South Africa, moved to America end of 1991 and fortunately continued my passion within the same style a few years later. I am currently a 5th degree black belt and a 6 time international karate champion in kumite (fighting). Professionally, I work in wealth management and believe it’s important for women to be aware and manage their finances as well as their surroundings.
2. What inspired you to host "Be Fierce & Fabulous - Empower Yourself" self-defense classes? When did you start?
I’ve been training for 32 years and wanted to share some of my knowledge with women to help empower and make them more aware of their surroundings. I began teaching self-defense classes in 2016 and have a passion to continue to empower women.
3. What kind of feedback have you been receiving after hosting sessions like these?
I’ve taught numerous self-defense classes over the last few years and have always received positive feedback from the women. They leave the class empowered, excited and grateful they have a few self-defense “tools” they can use to be aware of their everyday surroundings.
4. Your background in martial arts is so impressive and it's awesome that you've been a USA Women's Team Coach? What was your experience like?
It’s always rewarding giving back, helping the women and young girls to aspire and grow in their martial arts journey. To also be able to share my knowledge and expertise at a competitive level, and to push them beyond their limits.
5. Why do you think it's important to support women entrepreneurs in Hudson County?
I feel women are underserved as entrepreneurs and it’s important to support and help each each other grow at all levels.
6. If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?
Never give up, always give your best, find and pursue your passion regardless of what anyone says.
We hope you enjoyed reading about Christina as much as we did! Please comment down below if you have any questions on other ways to empower yourself through self-defense!
